US wants Indian market to open up for foreign goods

US under secretary for international trade, Francisco Sanchez recently said that there is increasing concern about some recent policy decisions that seem to tilt the playing field in India away from US businesses and other foreign firms. “For example, in clean technology, local content requirement (LCR) explicitly discriminates against imports,” he said.

Speaking at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event, he said, “My concern is that many of the policies designed to protect Indian industries will hurt them in the end.”

Citing the example of India’s national solar mission, which requires domestic sourcing of content, Sanchez said the path India appears to be following, will force it to miss out on innovative products.
