For the seventh consecutive year, Infineon Technologies has emerged as the global No 1 in the power semiconductor and module market. A report from IMS Research Data estimated that the global market for power semiconductors contracted by 21.5 per cent to US$ 11 billion in 2009, from US$ 14 billion in 2008. In spite of this development, Infineon’s market share increased to 10.7 per cent. Infineon has maintained its leadership in the EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) region with a market share up 1.3 percentage points to 24.3 per cent, and in North and South America where it was up 0.4 percentage points to 11.5 per cent.
In the field of renewable energy also, power semiconductors are instrumental in feeding the electric power harnessed from wind or solar radiation into the grid, and for minimising energy loss in transmission from the place generated to the place where it is consumed.
