Ajmer in Rajasthan is the first district in the country where the postmen will distribute the mail using ‘green’ vehicles run by solar energy. Five eco-friendly solar auto rickshaws were distributed to local postmen in different parts of the district by Sachin Pilot, Union Minister of State for Telecom and IT, who also promised locals that he aimed to increase IT services in the remote villages of the country. The department will look at the speed of delivery and the costing of this project, and then consider spreading this ‘green post’ concept to other parts of the country.
The solar auto rickshaws were developed by scientists of the Indian government in collaboration with the IT research department of Kinetic Motors, Pune. The vehicle will run on a battery that gets recharged by solar energy.
