In an effort to promote solar power, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has announced that in the next two-year period, power plants in India would add 1100 MW of energy to the grid, out of which 184 MW would be from solar power and PV plants that are currently being constructed. One of MNRE’s objectives is to bring down the cost of solar energy and increase R&D activities in the solar sector. In the last 15 years, India has seen a rising demand for electricity, at an average increase of 8 per cent per annum.
