Speaking on the occasion, Singh said this scheme will not only help Punjab to bring down its energy consumption and manage peak demand, but also benefit the citizens of Nangal to make monetary savings on their electricity bills.

According to The Outlook, he said that “The fact that the distribution has crossed over 270 million across the country, speaks volumes about the government’s commitment and the dedication of each citizen towards making India an energy-efficient nation,”.

Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) will be distributing energy-efficient fans, 9W LED bulbs and 20W LED tube lights at competitive prices to the citizens of the city under the scheme, company’s regional manager Nitin Bhatt said.

Punjab has already distributed over 4 lakh LED bulbs, 10,000 energy efficient fans and 25,0000 LED tube lights in 10 districts of the state under the ‘UJALA’ scheme, he said.

“This has helped the state achieve an annual energy savings of about 5.4 crore kWh and monetary savings of Rs 215 million annually on consumer’s electricity bills,” he said.

The prices of 9W LED bulbs under UJALA is at an affordable price of Rs 70, 20W LED tube lights to Rs 220 and energy efficient fans to Rs 1,200, he said.

The UJALA scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 5, 2015 with a target of replacing 770 million inefficient bulbs with energy efficient LED bulbs by March, 2019.
