The fourth Delhi International Renewable Energy Conference (DIREC) 2010 was concluded recently at India Expo Mart in Greater Noida. With a pledge to support renewable energy for security, climate change and economic development. The event witnessed participation from 71 countries and various representatives from ministers, energy experts and government representatives.
A number of parallel events were also organised during DIREC 2010. Some of these were on clean development mechanism (CDM) projects in renewable energy such as BEE’s National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency, UNDP’s ACE project on cook stoves, wind energy, solar water heating systems, national funding institutions promoting renewable energy, and others. The expo facilitated interaction between the experts and practitioners in the field of renewable energy technology.
At the inaugural session of the conference, Pratibha Patil, the President of India, said that energy security is one of the key issues for a growing economy. The government has included solar energy among the eight national missions to promote development under the National Action Plan on Climate Change, which incorporates a vision of sustainable development.
